Tale of 40k Gamers - Wrythhold edition

Over the past few weeks there has been discussion amongst our gaming group about new projects for the year.  These coincided with GW releasing the new Army Starter boxes.

We normally look at making armies for competitive play but we all enjoy campaign and narrative play more.  Looking at the new box sets they all clock in around 400 points so it seems a good place to start.

We have around 8 people participating so far with a good spread of army choices.  The guidelines are to make a new Army from new products or for me, use things from my vast unused collection and turn them into a painted army.

Stage 1
Make and paint a 400 point force with the following restrictions.
1 HQ
1 Troop
1-2 choices from Troop, Elite, Fast or Heavy.

Ryan has put together an excellent document with suggestions and guidelines covering all these things.

Once participants have their core forces ready we will arrange a gaming day of narrative battles. Following additions to the armies will then be arranged.

I have chosen Heretics from Imperial Armour 13 and Word Bearers using the Betrayal at Calth miniatures.  This will encourage me to get real work done with the Heretic forces I have toyed around with from the Forge World of Wrakinos, a setting I have used for the Rogue Trader rpg and small 40k games with Alex.  The Chaplain/Dark Apostle is the first miniature from the Calth set I have worked on so far.

Painting - Evil Greeblies

I have been having a lot of fun kitbashing a handful of evil minions, cultists and general greeblie fellows.  After seeing some fantastic cultists here I was inspired to make my own.  With all the role playing and wargames I play and host they certainly won't gather dust on the shelf.

So I bought a box of Plague Monks from STP and when they arrived rummaged through the left over bits from Cody's Plaguebearers.  Here are the first two completed(minus basing) results.

I was really impressed by all the parchments and tattered robes of the Skaven plague monks.  The first chap has a plaguebearer head, severed heads attached to the plague monk staff and then one of the multiple gleeful Nurglings sitting on the staves top.  The second has the removed tail reattached to the cut off face of a plaguemonk.  I left the bottom jaw in place and I think it works well.  I cut down the clawed feet slightly to give the impression of rag swaddled feet instead.

I have a parchment toting cultist almost finished and Joel, a regular gaming buddy from thebrushofdoom, has said I can have access to his many many Empire bits and pieces to craft more miscreants.

Painting - WoC Tzeentch Daemon Prince

Last night before allowing myself to finish Bioshock Infinite - awesome ending btw! I finished Cody's Daemon Prince for his first Warhammer Fantasy army.

The colour palette contains all the colours which will be used in the army. You can see by the turquoise armour plates what the Chaos Warriors will look like eventually - I have done a test one and it looks good. May do a little more work on the sword though.

The plan is to magentise the Daemon Prince's feet so when Cody decides on a set of bases the DP can be swapped between Fantasy and 40k easily.

Must say I did enjoy painting this model. The colours are nice and bright and a change to what I normally use. The new/current GW paint range really has some superb shades throughout the greens and blues and I want to incorporate them more into some future projects.

This chap will be making his event debut at Runefang next weekend so watch out - I'm not looking forward to dealing with the build it has.

Now time to load up the new Tomb Raider.

Homecon Chaos take 2?!

Ok so after Jack's advice and thinking a litle bit more about what I'd like the army to do I have come up with the following, comments please as usual

Sorcerer Lord, L4, Infernal Puppet, Talisman of Preservation, Stream of Corruption 370

Exalted Hero, Tzeentch, BSB, Shield, Ironcurse Icon 155
Exalted Hero, Tzeentch, Disc, Charmed Shield 5, Book of Secrets, 3rd Eye of Tzeentch, Talis of Prot, Biting Blade 215

20 Chaos Warriors, Tzeentch, FC, Shields, Standard of Discipline 385
30 Marauders, Khorne, FC, Flails 200
30 Marauders, Khorne, FC, GW 200
5 Chaos Hounds 30

6 Chaos Trolls
5 Chaos Knights, Khorne, Muso 240

Warshrine 130
Hellcannon 205

Total 2400

Keeps a mobile disc riding character to steal spells but has a better stat line so can threaten the rare lines more.

The warshrine will augment a unit where it needs too and the 6 trolls will indeed be more effective.

Got rid of the collar of Khorne as it did offend the fluff enthusiast in me! Tjough I am now missing the dispel scroll which can always be an bonus in games!

Chaos for Homecon me thinks

Well Homecon next weekend will help me decide if I'm going to invest in Warriors of Chaos as my main fantasy army.

The host Pete is kindly letting me borrow his models for the two days and I will bring a few along to supplement what I need.

Hopefully I will like them enough to get stuck into them with the paint as I don't have a fully painted army for fantasy. Personally its sucks big time considering how I usually clean up in the presentation category in 40K.

So heres my thoughts for a list which should function well and has a little bit of everything I'd like to buy and paint up.

Sorcerer Lord, L4, Infernal Puppet, Charmed Shield, Stream of Corruption Talisman of Preservation (shadow magic) 375

Sorcerer, L2, Tzeentch, Disc, Talisman of Prot, Third Eye, Dispel Scroll 225
Exalted Champ, Tzeentch, BSB, Collar of Khorne, Enchanted Shield 185

24 Chaos Warriors, Tzeentch, Shields, FC, Standard of Discipline 449
30 Marauders, Khorne, FC, Flails 200
30 Marauders, Khorne, FC, GW 200
5 Chaos Hounds 30
5 Chaos Hounds 30
5 Marauder Horsemen, Slaanesh, Muso, L Armour, Spears, Throwing Spears 96

3 Chaos Trolls
5 Chaos Knights, Khorne, muso, standard, Banner of Eternal Flame 270

Hellcannon 205
Total 2400

Everything should perform some role in most games, the trolls are a personal want as I'd love to get the plastic River Trolls and have some fun. The second Mage is so I can make a cool conversion I have in mind and the rest is what I see tearing through a dead forest leaking shadows and darkness from their skin. When I actually paint up a test model it'l make sense.

The road to Runefang

I have expressed interest in Pete Dunn's upcoming WFB campaign 'fun' weekend and the more I think about it the more enthusiastic I am to get a force together and go.

I need a 2k army with a focus on fun and fluff which suits me fine as thats how I want to play WFB anyway.

My options are High Elves or Warriors of Chaos and I'm heavily leaning towards Chaos as so many models are sitting out in the gaming room ready for some painting love.

I will be making a Tzeentch build with a Lord leading a force of magic addicted followers. Im not sure if I should use a Sorcerer or Lord as my general, mage fits the theme better but I want the melee smashing power of the lord but I can prob get that with an exalted hero.

If anyone has suggestions please share, I may even use a spawn or 2 even though they're supposed to be crap but if it fits the theme I don't care.
